INTRODUCTION
The main purpose of the 2008 Ministers’ Conference of Algiers is to bring together all the Ministers of the African Region, NGOs, Donors and Representatives of the Private Sector in order to enhance the commitments and agree on a common declaration « The Common African Voice » called the Algiers’ Declaration which will be submitted to the World Ministers’ Forum on research for health in November 2008 in Bamako (Mali). The Algiers’ Conference will endeavour in particular:
a) To renew the commitments with a view to strengthening the production of knowledge and reducing the deficit of knowledge in order to improve the development of health and health equity in Africa ;
b) To underscore innovating approaches and some successful experiences in terms of capacity building for research, information and knowledge management in the African Region ;
c) To enhance the use of fact based data in the elaboration of policies and decision making.
Some 500 participants are expected. Algiers can provide modern Conference facilities and high quality hotels to host participants in this event. The Palais des Nations (Club des Pins west of Algiers ) will host this conference.
