STEERING COMMITTEE

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE PATNERS


The Steering Committee will prepare for the 2008 Algiers Ministerial Conference on Research for Health.

At its fist meting (Algiers, 02 May 2007) it approved its terms of reference  which include the following:

Prepare and make available, in conjunction with the Secretariat, an updated documentation on research for health issues;

prepare the content of the Algiers meeting and assist, at its request, the Organizing Committee set up by Algeria.

answer the following three questions:

  How can the African Region promote and enhance research for health by its own means?

  How can the African Region draw benefit from Research for Health conducted throughout the world?

  Does the African Region expect the development partners

- to play a federating role for the adoption of a joint platform to be submitted to the Ministerial Conference;

- to propose the form in which the African platform will be tabled to the world conference;

- to inform WHO regional office for Africa and the countries of the results of their work.

 

The Steering Committee reviews and adopts the proposals submitted by the Steering Committee concerning:

the draft agenda

the date  June 23-26, 2008 for the holding of the African conference for research in health

the follow-up mechanisms.

 

Organizing Committee

 

The Algerian Organizing Committee appointed by the Ministry of Health, Population and Hospital reform is responsible for the organization of all local arrangements for the Conference of Algiers.

 

 Secrétariat

 

The Steering Committee has asked WHO-AFRO to ensure the secretariat of the Committee. 

WHO Regional Office will support the organisation of the conference by acting as secretariat. Its main tasks will include the following:

a. providing assistance to the Steering Committee for planning and organizing the Algiers ministerial conference;

b. facilitating the meetings of the Steering Committee;

c. production of timely documentation of all meetings;

d. logistic arrangements outside of Algeria

e. process financial support for the various groups identified;

f.  control and review the agreed budget;

g. mobilise additional resources to fund the;

h. draft and finalize the report of the meetings and the conference, which will be submitted to the members of the Steering Committee.
